Basement Window Opening Expansion (Small to Large Multi-Panel Upgrade)

Project Overview

Converted an undersized basement window into a significantly larger multi-panel vinyl window system by enlarging the masonry opening, installing the new window set, sealing the perimeter, and restoring the exterior foundation finish for a clean, durable result.

Analysis

The original basement window was small and limited light and ventilation. Enlarging a below-grade masonry opening requires controlled removal and a straight, stable perimeter so the new unit can be installed without frame stress or uneven gaps. Because the window sits low to grade, perimeter sealing is critical to reduce the risk of moisture intrusion and air leakage. The surrounding foundation finish also required patching and refinishing after the opening was expanded to maintain a continuous exterior envelope.

Process

- Removed existing small basement window unit - Marked layout for the enlarged opening and protected the work area - Cut/removed masonry to widen the rough opening - Cleaned and prepped opening for installation - Set, shimmed, leveled, and fastened the new multi-panel window - Sealed perimeter and restored exterior foundation finish - Final inspection and cleanup

Outcome

The basement now has a substantially larger window opening with a wide multi-panel vinyl window system that improves natural light and usability. The unit is installed square and sealed at the perimeter, with exterior finish restored around the opening for long-term durability in a low-to-grade location.

Project Details

Materials Used
